چکیده

We report on the formal functional verification of a simple device driver for an ATAPI hard disk in Isabelle/HOL. The proof is based on a functional model of the hard disk, which has been integrated into the instruction set architecture of a verified RISC processor as one of several memory-mapped devices. The result is an interleaved computational model, in which the devices and the processor take turns in execution. Even in this concurrent context, the verification can be kept largely sequential and modular with respect to the other devices. This is made possible by sound reordering of computation traces, given that devices do not interfere with each other and the driver monopolizes the hard disk. To the best of our knowledge, this paper presents the first formal functional verification of a device driver against a realistic device

OS verification extended: on the formal verification of device drivers and the correctness of client-server software

This thesis tackles two important challenges in OS verification: The formal verification of device drivers and the correctness of client/server software. Device drivers are an integral part of system software. Not only high-level functionality such as file I/O depends on devices. Even basic OS features, such as demand paging, need correctly implemented drivers. In this thesis, we show how to pe...

Automatic Synthesis of High-Assurance Device Drivers

Device drivers are hard to develop and are notoriously unreliable [13,20]. While constant innovation in the area of electronic design automation has led to dramatic improvements in the IC design process, device driver development practices have not changed much since the days of mainframe computers. As a result, it is common nowadays for a product release to be delayed by driver rather than sil...

Formal Device and Programming Model for a Serial Interface

The verification of device drivers is essential for the pervasive verification of an operating system. To show the correctness of device drivers, devices have to be formally modeled. In this paper we present the formal model of the serial interface controller UART 16550A. By combining the device model with a formal model of a processor instruction set architecture we obtain an assembler-level p...

Verification of Computer Switching Networks: An Overview

Formal verification has seen much success in several domains of hardware and software design. Similarly, software verification has seen success in device-drivers (e.g. [3]) and concurrent software (e.g. [4]). The area of network verification, which cons...
